Before I sit down to recite the Ambrosial Sukhmani Sahib my mind please take note of the following points:

It's almost the time of the year when the world busies itself with preparations for the holiday season. Everywhere the reminders of Thanksgiving, Hanukah, and Christmas are filling the air. At this time, around November, my heart is in high spirits because a very special holiday or I might say "holy day" is just around the comer. This special day is the birth anniversary of my dear Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Guru Nanak, the messenger who brought light to his part of the world more than five hundred years ago. The Guru who preached the oneness and equality of human beings, regardless of status and color. The Guru who didn't "convert people" but directed them to be true to their faith be it Hindu, Muslim or Christian. He loved God so deeply that his beautiful hymns were magnets that drew all to his priceless message. His message was: Love God with all your heart, pray for the good of all mankind and perform selfless service.

This Guru whose words have lighted countless candles along the path, is the light of my life. His love for God has inspired and awakened the dormant desire within to get in touch with the Supreme Source. His divine wisdom and compassion for the human plight has touched the heart. For someone who has felt even a tiny fraction of his greatness, each day is Gurpurab. Each day must be celebrated with thanksgiving and jubilation for such a Guru is the greatest blessing!

The birth anniversary of my Guru is a time to reflect upon my commitment and service to my Guru, to humbly acknowledge the endless gifts and favors he has shown me over the past year and to set new goals for sewa and simran. Guru Nanak said that a mortal has no control over spiritual or temporal accomplishments and cannot gain any favors on his own. He was totally resigned to the Divine Will. May the Divine Will that brought Guru Nanak's message of light into our lives, awaken in us a fervent love and longing for our Creator. May each day be a "Gurpurab" to celebrate and rejoice in the True Life - a life in total love and surrender to the Guru, who holds the key to God's Portal.

Waho Waho Tayree Waheguru!!!
